Do you know about Bookcrossing? It's become quite an addition for me since discovering it in late August 2005.  It's a wonderful exercise in serendipity as well as being a great way to pass on books that you have read and don't want to keep.  Basically, you just register a book on the bookcrossing website, put a wee note inside the book, including the bookcrossing ID number that you will get when you register the book, and then leave it somewhere public for someone else to find and read. Hopefully they will then make a journal entry for the book on the web site. As the process repeats itself, you can watch your book travelling the world and find out what others thought of it.

Bookcrossing is also a great community, you'll make great friends and find lots of people who share your passion for reading and are ready and willing to talk books until the cows come home.  And by sharing your reading experiences, you gain new perspectives on books and authors you may have previously dismissed and new ideas for books and reading you may enjoy.

Lots of the books I've registered with bookcrossing have gone to other members by mutual arrangement, but I love wild releasing books - just leaving them somewhere for someone to find - and watching what happens to then. Here are details of some of my recent wild releases that have been caught and journalled by someone else.

There are lots of other websites out there that provide useful information on bookcrossing, or additional tools that can make the bookcrossing even more fun. Visit our bookcrossing directory for more details.

Bookcrossing is a great way to get recommendations for authors that are new to you, to find books that you will enjoy but might otherwise have missed and generally to share your reading and make it even more fun.  I've taken part in several challenges, bookrings and rays and local meet ups. It's all great fun.

Wild Releases Caught in 2006

All the catches detailed here are genuine wild releases. I have not included books passed on to other bookcrossers.

There are a few place where I routinely release books. My favourites, in no particular order, are:

bullet Victoria Gardens, Westminster, London
bullet The Clarence on Whitehall, Westminster, London. (This is an official bookcrossing zone managed by fellow bookcrosser, WistfulDragon).
bullet Charlecote Grove, Sydenham, South East London
bullet Dulwich Park, Dulwich, South East London
bullet The Glades Shopping Centre, Bromley, Kent

  1. Big Brother by Jean Ritchie (7th April) Journalled about 10 days after release at the Clarence on Whitehall, but I know it went from the barrel much more quickly, as it wasn't there when I popped in a few days after release.

  2. Memory Touches Memory by John Lee Weldon (7th April) Journalled a couple of days after release at Westminster Tube Station. This one was found by a train driver!

  3. Magic, Magic for all the Family by Geoffrey Budworth (6th April) Journalled the day after release at Camden Town Tube Station.

  4. Chinese Gardening by Rosemary Manning (Journalled a few days after release at LA Fitness Centre in Sydenham

  5. Truth or Consequences by Lisa Roajay (6th April) Journalled the day after release at The Last Word Coffee Shop, in front of the British Library. It would seem that the book failed to impress. Its cover certainly didn't impress enough to read it before release.

  6. The Secret of Grange Farm by Francis Cowen (5th April) Journalled a couple of days after release on a Victoria Line Train.

  7. Madeleine's World by Brian Hall (5th April) Journalled on the day of release at King's Cross Tuber station. It was journalled so quickly that I didn't get to make release notes.

  8. Man and Boy by Tony Parsons (5th April). Journalled about a month after release at Westminster Tube Station.

  9. Son of the Black Stallion by Walter Farley (3rd April). Journalled a few days after release at Wimbledon Riding Stables. So far, a 100 per cent success rate for releases there, although I suspect that the Anonymous finder of this book is the same person who journalled and joined with my previous release.

  10. The Enemy by Desmond Bagley (30th March). Journalled a week or so after its release at The Clarence.

  11. Son of the Black Stallion by Walter Farley (journalled 30th March) Journalled about two weeks after release in a local park. A complete mystery as to how it got to an airport, any airport, let alone one in Lativa!

  12. Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott (journalled 29th March). Released two weeks before at the Clarence on Whitehall.

  13. The Substitute by Nigel Hawks (journalled 29th March) Released almost a month earlier in Mayow Park.

  14. St Brendan (journalled 28th March) Released almost a month before at Dulwich Picture Gallery

  15. The Ghosts of Triton by Ken Catran (journalled 28th March) Released earlier the same day in Victoria Gardens, Westminster.

  16. The Binding Chair by Kathryn Harrison (journalled 26th March) Released 3 weeks earlier at Bond Street Tube Station.

  17. Puffin Book of Horse and Pony Stories (journalled 26th March) Released 2 days previously at Wimbledon Riding Stables.

  18. The Substitute by Robert Hawks (journalled 26th March) Released 10 days earlier in Bromley High Street. How it found its way into a bookstore is a mystery.

  19. Magic Magic for all the Family by Geoffrey Budworth (journalled 22nd March) Released the day before in Victoria Gardens, Westminster

  20. The Ghosts of Triton by Ken Catran (journalled 20th March)  Released a few days earlier in Baxter Field

  21. Magic, Magic for All the Family by Geoffrey Budworth (journalled 20th March) Released few days before on the bench at the end of our street.

  22. The Unforgiving by Charlotte Cory (journalled 17th March) Released a couple of days before at Lewisham Hospital

  23. White City Blue by Tim Lott (journalled 17th March) Released a month earlier in a local bus stop shelter

  24. Martin Chatterton's Weird World of Pop (journalled 16th March) Released the day before at Dulwich Picture Gallery

  25. A Bridge Too Far by Cornelieus Ryan (journalled 10th March) Released a few days earlier in Victoria Gardens, Westminster

  26. The Exiles in Love by Hilary McKay (journalled 9th March) Released a few days earlier in Dulwich Park

  27. The Exiles in Love by Hilary McKay (journalled 5th March) Released the day before at Goodge Street tube station.

  28. Wildfire/ Siege of Silence/ The Sound of Distant Chatting/Night of Error (journalled 4th March) Released in the Clarence about a month earlier.

  29. The Exiles In Love by Hilary Mackay (journalled 3rd March). Released earlier the same day in Mayow Park in Sydenham, SE London. Odd journal entry, but I guess they liked it enough to take a note of the book's BCID before burning it. Ah well.

  30. Doomed Oasis by Hammond Innes (journalled 28th February). Released 10 days or so earlier on a Northern Line train. I have to say, I don't understand the journal entry at all.

  31. Does My Bum Look Big in This? by Arabella Weir (journalled 26th February). Released the day before on a train from London Bridge to Sutton.

  32. Wiggenstein in 90 Minutes by Paul Strathern (journalled 25th February).  Journalled the same day as releasing on a Northern Line train.

  33. A Faith that Touches the World - A Lent Course (journalled 25th February). Released the day before at The Clarence on Whitehall

  34. Father Brown Selected Stories by G K Chesterton (journalled 24th February). Another catch after releasing at The Clarence a couple of days before.

  35. Unnatural Exposure by Patricia Cornwall (journalled 24th February). Released a couple of days earlier, again at the The Clarence.

  36. Gorky Park by Martin Cruz Smith (journalled 24th February). Released a couple of days earlier at The Clarence on Whitehall.

  37. Lost Highways by Curtiss Ann Matlock (journalled 24th February). Released about three weeks earlier in Dulwich Park, although that doesn't seem to be where the finder found it.

  38. PostMortem by Patricia Cornwall (journalled 24th February) Released earlier the same day in Baxter Field - a small park area very close to home in South East London.

  39. Blood Hunt by Ian Rankin (journalled 23rd February). Released five days earlier at the Maritime Museum in Falmouth, Cornwall.  This book has since be released at the Maritime Museum in Greenwich - yep, I took it all the way to Cornwall for it to come back to South East London - and caught again. A double-jumper, yippee!

  40. Hocus Pocus! by Giles Brandryth (journalled 20th February). Released three days earlier at Exeter Services on the M5, as we were travelling down to Cornwall for the weekend.

  41. Blessings in Disguise by Alec Guinness (journalled 20th February). Another book that I was delighted to have caught and journalled because the release spot was so special - Trevethy Quoit on Bodmin Moor. Released the day before.

  42. Dear Me by Peter Ustinov (journalled 19th February). I am so glad that this book was caught and journalled, because it was released in the coolest - and coldest - spot I have yet found: the Hurlers prehistoric stone circles on Bodmin Moor. (journalled 19th February) It was such a cold day and hubby and I nearly got lost on the Moor as the mist came down, but it was a wonderful afternoon, and the stone circles just amazing. They are nearly 4,500 years old!  Released the same day it was journalled.

  43. Dreams of Innocence by Lisa Appignanesi (journalled 19th February). Released the day before at Falmouth Maritime Museum. Journalled so quickly that I never got to make proper release notes!

  44. Quite Contrary by Suzannah Dunne (journalled 19th February). Released a few days earlier in Victoria Gardens.

  45. Slide, Charlie Brown by Charles M Schulz (journalled 17th February). Released a few days earlier in Victoria Gardens.

  46. To be the Best by Barbara Bradford Taylor (journalled 17th February). Why is it that every book I released by Barbara Bradford Taylor is caught and journalled? Folks are going to get completely the wrong idea about the sort of stuff I read. I released these books precisely because I DON'T want to read to them!  Released the day before it was journalled in Victoria Gardens, Westminster.

  47. Nancy Reagan by Kitty Kelley (catch journalled 16th February). This book was released about three weeks earlier at a local bus stop.

  48. What's Up God? A Romance of the Apocalypse by Simon Louvish (catch journalled 16th February). Released a day earlier on the bench at the end of our road.

  49. Drowning Ruth by Christina Schwartz (catch journalled 15th February). Released two weeks earlier in Dulwich Park.

  50. Portrait in Brownstone by Loius Auchincloss (catch journalled 14th February). Released a few days earlier in the Clarence.  I'm not really sure whether to count this as a catch or not: the finder has journalled the book, recording the fact that they found it, but they seem to have left it where it was.

  51. The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (catch journalled 14th February). Released a few days earlier in the The Clarence on Whitehall.

  52. Your Royal Hostage by Antonia Fraser (catch journalled 14th February). Released a few days before in The Clarence on Whitehall.

  53. The Shrapnel Academy by Fay Weldon (catch journalled 13th February). Released a month earlier in the Marquis of Granby, my "local" from work.  The book is now in Antigua but would seem to on its way back to London.

  54. Draftglass by Samuel R Delany (catch journalled 10th February). Released a week earlier in Dulwich Park.

  55. The Burden of Proof by Scott Turow (catch journalled 9th February). Released about a month earlier at the OBCZ at the Stamford Arms, South London.

  56. The Day After Tomorrow by Sharleen Cooper Cohen (catch journalled 8th February) Released a day earlier in Victoria Gardens.

  57. The Fourth Protocol by Frederick Forsythe (catch journalled 7th February) Released a day earlier in Victoria Gardens.

  58. Galatic Odyssey by Keith Laumer (catch journalled 7th February) Released the day before in Victoria Gardens.

  59. Innocent Blood by P D James (catch journalled 7th February). Released earlier the same day in Victoria Gardens.

  60. Secret Affair by Barbara Bradford Taylor (catch journalled 6th February) Released a day earlier in Greenwich Cinema.

  61. The Ghosts of Triton by Ken Catran (catch journalled 5th February). Released earlier the same day in Greenwich, near the very expensive small car park in front of Somerfield.  Lovely journal entry and a new member to boot!

  62. Wrecked by Robert Swindells (catch journalled 3rd February). Released the same day at a bus stop on Cobbs Corner. This book was caught and journalled so quickly that I hadn't even got home to make the release notes before it was confirmed that it was in someone else's loving care. Brilliant!

  63. Heaven's Door by Lynda Rose (catch journalled 3rd February). Released the day before in Victoria Gardens.

  64. The Italian Lesson by Janice Elliott (catch journalled 1st February). Released the day before in Victoria Gardens. Caught by a gentleman who has found several of my releases in this spot over the last few months. I think I'm stocking his library.

  65. Virtue by Sheena Mackesy (catch journalled 1st February)  Released two days earlier in Victoria gardens. Lovely journal entry from someone who seemed to really appreciate finding a book. It has already travelled from London to Scotland.

  66. The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy (catch journalled 30th January). Released the day before (Sunday) in Victoria Gardens

  67. Politika by Tom Clancy (catch journalled 27th January). Released the day before in Victoria Gardens.

  68. In the Frame by Dick Francis (catch journalled 27th January) Released a week earlier at the Clarence Official Bookcrossing Zone. Got to love the journal entry from this one - and they joined too.

  69. Brief Candles by Aldous Huxley (catch journalled 26th January). Released earlier the same day, in Victoria Gardens, next to the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London.

  70. Private Screening by Richard North Patterson (catch journalled 26th January). Journalled on the same day that it was released. Another catch in Victoria Gardens.

  71. Killashandra by Anne McCaffrey (catch journalled 24th January). My sixth, yep, sixth, catch of the day!  This one was released about a month earlier at the The Clarence on Whitehall and is now presumed to be somewhere in Glasgow, although the finder lives in America. Small world.

  72. The Sisterhood by Colin Forbes (catch journalled 24th January) released about a week earlier in The Clarence, a pub on Whitehall with an official book crossing zone. Not quite sure from the journal entry, but it seems that this book may have made its way to Norway.

  73. Exocet by Jack Higgins (catch journalled 24th January). Released about a week earlier in a nearby phone box. I'm dead chuffed because it's my first phone box release to be caught and journalled. I've always thought they should be a great place for successful releases.

  74. The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy (catch journalled 24th January). Released the day before in Victoria Gardens, Westminster (caught by a gentleman who has journalled several of my wild released books before)

  75. Waltzing the Cat by Pam Houston (catch journalled 24th January). Released the day before in Victoria Gardens, Westminster

  76. City of a Thousand Suns by Samuel R Delaney (catch journalled 23rd January), actually released two months earlier at Dulwich Picture Gallery, South London.

  77. Striesand: The Intimate Biography (catch journalled on 20th January). Released the day before in Victoria Gardens, Westminster, London.

  79. Slow Motion by Dani Shapiro (catch journalled on 19th January). Released about a week earlier at the Clarence on Whitehall in London. Now in Arizona.

  80. Temples of Delight by Barbara Trapido (catch journalled on 17th January). Released at the Clarence on Whitehall in London about two weeks earlier. Now in Germany.

  81. Flashpoint by David Hodges (catch journalled on 15th January 2006). This one was released just before Christmas in the main reception at Lewisham Hospital.

  82. Decider by Dick Francis (12th January 2006) released and caught in Victoria Gardens

  83. Liz: An Intimate Biography of Elizabeth Taylor by C.David Heymann (11th January 2006), caught three days after it was released on the bench at the end of our road.  Fingers crossed, it will make its way to Pakistan safely and then be journalled.

  84. Special Delivery by Danielle Steel (11th January 2006), caught the day after it was released in Victoria Gardens, Westminster, London.

  85. Something to Fall Back On by Maureen Lipman (9th January 2006), caught on the same day that it was released in Victoria Gardens, Westminster, London.

  86. Behind the Walls of Terra by Philip Jose Farmer (8 January 2006), originally released in Dulwich Park - another one actually released in 2005 but not caught/journalled until well into the new year.

  87. The Wizard of Linn by A E Van Vogt (6 January 2006), released at The Clarence, Whitehall, London  Ok, so this may have been caught in 2006, but it was actually released in December 2005.  My Italian isn't that good, so I had to look up a translation for the comment posted. It means "I must still read this".
  88. Pinocchio (5 January 2006), released in Victoria Gardens, London.  Yah! The first wild catch of 2006! Great way to start the new year.
